Benjamin “Pap” Singleton seemingly offered a solution. Take advantage of the Homestead Act and take land the government was giving to its citizens for free. The only requirement was to tame the land. The only problem was the offer panned out to very few blacks. More often, they were denied the opportunity and had to make the best of life in a strange land.
